  • Legal Knowledge and Experience

    The courses in the Professional Certificate in Arbitration assume that students have some basic understanding of the operation of the Australian legal system. Many students will already have sufficient knowledge through university study (for example, of a Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Accounting which included one or more commercial law courses) or through relevant professional experience.

    The first course in the Professional Certificate in Arbitration, LAW 7155 Introduction to Arbitration, includes optional modules that assist students to gain or revise the necessary legal skills to succeed in the Professional Certificate in Arbitration.

    Students without any legal background or who wish to develop a stronger understanding of the Australian legal system may choose to enrol on a non-award basis in Adelaide Law School’s LAW 7177 Introduction to Australian Law course in advance of undertaking the Professional Certificate in Arbitration. Key details about the Introduction to Australian Law course for those students who wish to undertake it:

    • You will need to apply for this course as non-award study. Please note that courses undertaken on a non-award basis are not eligible for FEE-HELP (an interest free loans facility for students enrolled in fee-paying postgraduate coursework) and students must pay the full course fee upfront by the census date. 
    • It is offered as an intensive to be completed within a shorter time period, with online tutorials and full-day face to face sessions.
    • The majority of content for this course will be covered by the commencement of the Professional Certificate however students undertaking this option will have approximately 4 weeks of concurrent study and should be prepared for 15-20 hours of study time per week over that period.

  • Entry requirements

    This is a post-graduate Award program and, admission requires one of the following qualifications:

    1. a recognised university degree
    2. diploma or other tertiary qualification (University or TAFE)
    3. a recognised industry-based qualification
    4. at least 2 years’ professional experience holding a responsible position in a field of practice or discipline
