'Change for Good' Research Tuesdays

'Change for Good' Research Tuesdays

Over the past ten years, the work of the independent South Australian Law Reform Institute (SALRI) has led to landmark changes to state laws. And in this special Research Tuesdays’ event, we will look back and revisit the controversial and contentious projects the SALRI has tackled head on, resulting in remarkable outcomes for the community.

Based at the University of Adelaide, the SALRI was formed by an agreement between the Attorney-General of South Australia and the University. The SALRI’s role is to review and research outdated laws, and report back to the Attorney-General.

In this presentation, you’ll hear from passionate researchers and students from the SALRI, as they reflect on their important contributions, including

  • Removal of legislative discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, intersex status or gender, including the legal registration of sex and gender, equal recognition of relationships and access to existing laws relating to parentage
  • Defences in criminal law better suited for victims of family violence
  • A Relationships Register
  • Abortion law reform that has especially benefitted people in regional and remote communities
  • Elimination of the outdated homosexual advance defence and the wider defence of provocation to murder
  • An improved legal framework for surrogacy in South Australia
  • Evidence law to deal with new technologies

We hope you can join us for November’s lecture, one not to be missed, as we celebrate the breadth of research undertaken by the SALRI.
